Once again, the Russet Potato Exchange played host for the Michigan Upper Penninsula Potato Growers cook out at Norway Speedway at the Dickinson County Fairgrounds. This year a rare Thursday night race became the venue for a fun night of brats, burgers and late model racing on the storied third mile paved track. This year Jeff Weinfurter piloted the Biggins Pontiac for Schulz Racing against a strong field of local talent. The evening started out with a great meal thanks to the grilling expertise of Tony Van Damme before the excitement shifted to the race track.
Weinfurter started the night with a respectable qualifying effort placing 11th, solidly in the feature line up. Jeff’s first test would be in the heat races. He passed with flying colors as he jumped out to a quick lead in his heat race and cruised to his first victory at Norway Speedway much to the approval of the potato growers in the grand stands. Rain showers slowed the nights schedule and at times it looked as though the feature race could be in jeopardy. However, a good job drying the track and a break in the weather and soon the late models were lined up for the big event. Scott Stanchina took his #41 Chevy Impala SS to an early lead with Jeff Weinfurter in the #1 Biggins Pontiac right on his bumper. The two steadily pulled away from the field threatening to run away with the 35 lap race. At lap 19 the caution flag came out for a spin in the back in the pack and the field was tightened up for the restart. The two leaders went back to dicing for first place as Dalton Zehr joined the fray in the #119 Monte Carlo. Zehr went to the outside making short work of Weinfurter then motored past Stanchina with 7 laps to go. Zehr pulled away to capture the win with Stanchina (2nd) and Weinfurter (3rd) crossing the line in tandem.
RPE would like to thank all the growers in attendance making it a very memorable night.

This year, for Joel's 10-year anniversary with Russet Potato Exchange / Biggins, he donated a bicycle to be given away at Golden Sands Speedway on June 5. Cheyenne Plaska was one of 29 lucky kids who won a bicycle given away by the race and track teams. Congratulations! |
